The Charleston Aquarium is an excellent place for kids and adults to have an unforgettable experience. Many different types of fish, reptiles, and other aquatic life are on display at this indoor aquarium.

General Thomas Sumter, a Revolutionary War hero, is among South Carolina's most famous sons.

He is the inspiration for a county, a city, and the renowned Fort Sumter in Charleston.

In addition to his bravery in battle, Gen. Sumter is best known as another contributor to South Carolina. His mascot, the Gamecock, is the mascot of the University of South Carolina.

But Gen. Sumter is only one of the South Carolinians featured at the Sumter County Museum.

The whole museum is a collection of smaller galleries that transport you to past periods of South Carolina life.

The first is the magnificent Williams-Brice House, built in 1916 by R. Virginia Moses Phelps.

The house's rich moldings and paneling are a brilliant example of Edwardian architecture. Several rooms are styled in the period.

The Homestead, made up of two original buildings moved from southern Sumter County, and six amusements recreate a typical farm community from 1750 to 1850.

Touches such as organic gardening give you the impression that you have stumbled upon a large farm.

Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for young people ages 6-17.

Make sure to call ahead for information on living history days at the museum, when costumed settlers give demonstrations on the Homestead.
